We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Director of Payments Operations to lead and optimize our payment operations and risk management framework. This leader will play a critical role in safeguarding transactional integrity, ensuring seamless payment processing, and proactively identifying and mitigating operational risk across all payment channels. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in fintech operations, payment systems, collections, and reconciliation, with a passion for operational excellence and innovation.
Payments Risk Management
Identify and mitigate operational and financial risks across the end-to-end payment lifecycle, including reconciliations, ledger integrity, and settlement processes.
Monitor and manage daily payment processing exceptions, including failed transactions, duplicate payments, misrouted funds, and reconciliation discrepancies.
Manage all aspects of the credit card chargeback and ACH dispute processes to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant resolution of customer claims.
Oversee the operational processes related to ACH returns and managing collections activities to ensure regulatory compliance, minimize financial losses, and maintain positive customer relationships.
Collaborate with product, engineering, and compliance teams to assess risk impacts and operational support needs from new products or changes to payment methods or flows.
Payments Operations Oversight
Oversee day-to-day cash management activities, including inflows/outflows, account balancing, and customer fund allocation.
Drive operational excellence in transaction processing, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and minimal exceptions.
Lead issue triage, root-cause analysis, and resolution for transaction-related escalations in partnership with customer support and third-party processors.
Maintain and evolve documentation, process maps, and SOPs for payment operations.
Leadership and Strategy
Build and lead a high-performing team focused on payment operations and risk mitigation.
Define KPIs, SLAs, and operational dashboards to measure efficiency and identify areas for improvement.
Serve as a key stakeholder in audits, regulatory exams, and internal reviews related to payment flows and risk processes.
Partner cross-functionally with finance, compliance, legal, and engineering to support business scalability and compliance in payment operations.
Required:
8–12 years of experience in fintech, payments, or financial services, with a focus on risk management and payment operations.
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, or related field; advanced degree or certifications (e.g., CAMS, CTP) is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Required:
Deep understanding of payment networks (ACH, RTP, checks, wires, cards), ledger systems, and reconciliation practices.
Extensive experience in managing chargeback and dispute resolution processes, with in-depth knowledge of card network regulations (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) and NACHA operating rules, ensuring compliance and effective mitigation of financial risk.
Strong analytical and process design skills, with a demonstrated ability to lead root-cause investigations and implement controls.
Possess a strong blend of analytical, technical, and organizational skills to ensure accurate and timely reconciliation of financial transactions.
Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
